State of the Kaiju: Onward to 2018!

2017's almost over! We're getting the party started a little early here, because who isn't ready to leave 2017 behind?

State of the Kaiju

Lots has happened in the world of Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy this year. Let's take a look back!

What happened:

At the end of March, we successfully made it through Steam Greenlight's community approval process! Of course, the program died shortly after. But hey, it was an accomplishment at the time!

In April, I was interviewed by Game Warp. We talked about Kaiju, C. Kane, and more! Check it out, it's a fun interview!

• Kaiju Big Battel performed at TwitchCon 2017 and Fighto Fantasy made an appearance, complete with a full-size arcade cabinet replica featuring art designed by Soda Piggy!

• A new Fighto Fantasy trailer debuted at TwitchCon.

• In November, a playable demo for Windows was released on Steam.

What didn't:

• Fighto Fantasy was not released when I'd hoped it would be! Many factors at play here, with everyone on the team underestimating how much time a project of this scale would take, especially when we've all got day jobs/families. Development continues, with an unspecified 2018 release date on the horizon. It's better for the game to be as good as it possibly can be than for it to be rushed. At least we didn't burn through Kickstarter money or anything!

Who Are We?

The team behind Fighto Fantasy is Super Walrus Games. We're just a tiny handful of dudes making games and having a good time. Let's learn about each other!

Paul Harrington - http://superwalrusland.com/

My name's Paul and I'm the writer, director, and designer of Fighto Fantasy. I run this blog and the Super Walrus Games Facebook page. I've been working on games as a hobby since 1998, when I started making Walthros. When I'm not working on games, I write film and game reviews and criticism on Wobble Reviews. I'm a film and fish tank enthusiast with a love of gaudy neon. In 1992, I drew a goofy comic about a hungry, grouchy fish named Bob Surlaw who has since gone on to star in his own video games, court-room drama, and political campaign. Bob even wrote his own autobiography!

Soda Piggy (W. James Pandelis) - https://sodapiggymusic.com/

Fighto Fantasy's pixel artist, Soda Piggy also helps come up with game design ideas and provides coding assistance. He is primarily a freelance graphic artist and composer and has a fire for working on retro-style games, like this one, and has a good knowledge of old gaming systems' art. When he's not working on games, he is playing them, and always looking for new inspiration. He maintains the game's Twitter account.

Glock & mr8bit - https://glockandmr8bit.bandcamp.com/

The musicians behind Fighto Fantasy and other Super Walrus Games titles. Glock and mr8bit first found fame busking outside of the graveyard in the small town of Union, Connecticut. Through a series of increasingly-unlikely events, they embarked on a whirlwind tour of America, culminating in a police chase through the winding hills of San Francisco. While serving time in federal prison, Glock spent his days power lifting weights while mr8bit spent his days mostly crying and eating paper towels. Upon their release, the pair used their new cache of street cred to rise through the ranks of the Mullido Diablos cartel, ultimately transforming the organization from a ruthless drug syndicate into a profitable textile distributor. Satisfied with their accomplishments and not wanting for money, they returned to their first love: music. They have produced several wildly successful soundtracks for several wildly successful games that have since become household names for people who aren't squares. They continue to be true titans of the industry, yet have somehow managed to remain humble despite all of their awesome achievements that will never be duplicated by anyone ever throughout the entire history of the universe.

James Paige and Ralph Versteegen - https://rpg.hamsterrepublic.com/ohrrpgce/Main_Page

James & Ralph are the developers of the OHRRPGCE (Official Hamster Republic Role Playing Game Construction Engine), along with Mike, Simon, Jay, Yuriy and yet more contributors.

James lurks in California with his lovely family. He enjoys making games just a tiny bit more than he enjoys playing them, and he enjoys fixing bugs just a tiny bit more than he enjoys creating new
ones.

Ralph spends much too much time chasing escapee sheep back into their paddocks and growing exotics on a small farm in New Zealand. When he's not farming or working on the OHRRPGCE or a dozen other projects simultaneously he's meant to be completing his graduate studies in pattern recognition.

What's Next?

Keep checking back here, on Twitter, and on Facebook for weekly updates! You can follow the game's development bit by bit as we reveal new characters, songs, locations, and more. Thank you to everyone who's stuck by us in spite of the delays! Have a good New Year's, and watch out for monsters.

Demon on the Dance Floor

We all know monsters love stomping through the city, but you know what else they love? Sleazy nightclubs. Purple rugs, velvet curtains? You can bet that's going to attract a giant monster or two. Here we see the Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy heroes up against a mystery foe. This silhouette looks oddly familiar! What's going on here?!

A Ghost Story

The Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy demo release gave us some useful player feedback! To help players better understand the game's mechanics, we've added some spooky new buddies. In the Abyss, you'll now find the ghosts of defeated playtesters. Talk to them to learn how they died and you may be able to avoid a similar fate!

Bad to the Bone Man

We're continuing to improve older bits of Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy as we go! Previously, enemy reinforcements would just pop into existence and it felt kind of weird. That's changing now, and Hell Monkey's undead army now rises from the ground!

Subway Your Way

There are all sorts of fun things to do in Boston. Sit in traffic. Get yelled at by strangers. Ride the subway. Get lectured at by that guy with the End of the World sign who's somehow everywhere.

In Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy, you don't have to worry about traffic but you definitely will get yelled at by strangers and you'll have to rely on public transportation to get around.

Common Foes Find Fun Together

From Dino Kang to Hell Monkey to Shrooma Tango, we all love the big Kaiju Big Battel villains, but sometimes it's fun to check in on the little guys, the low-level grunts that Cube has convinced to fight in his name. Here we see some of the enemy types you'll encounter in minor battles in the Boston zone. When they're not pummeling heroes, they like to do the whole tourist thing.

State of the Kaiju 2017

Welcome to the official Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy development blog!

Fighto Fantasy is an SNES-style RPG using characters from Kaiju Big Battel, a live monster wrestling show. It's powered by the OHRRPGCE engine, and will be available on PC, Mac, Linux, and Android. Future platforms are up in the air right now, but I'd like to see as many people able to play as possible! It will be sold on Steam and Google Play for $10. The base game will be around 10 hours long, with future updates provided for free. The Steam page is here!

The team behind Fighto Fantasy is Super Walrus Games. We're just a tiny handful of dudes making games and having a good time. Let's learn about each other!

Supersized Smackdown

This week's Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy fighter is the Burger Bear! He's hairy, he's heroic, he's a hamburger. Burger Bear is here to test your strength in a series of progressively harder challenges. Each friendly fight with the Burger Bear is harder than the last but offers greater rewards! Hard Times

We want to make sure Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy is enjoyable by players of all skill levels, so we made sure to offer a variety of difficulty levels! Normal mode is fair but challenging, Easy mode is for people just here for the story and jokes, and Hard mode is for people looking for a more brutal experience. You can switch between Easy and Normal at any time, but be careful, once you select Hard mode you're in it for the long run!

Shady Gentlemen

There are some things darker than Dr. Cube in the world of Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy. In each of the game's zones are hidden encounters with a mysterious cult trying to revive something wicked. What could it be? How can they be stopped?

Combat Spotlight: Slo Feng #3

Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy - Slo Feng Combat Spotlight #3!

Odin Strike: Slo Feng uses his godlike strength to tear into every enemy on the battlefield simultaneously! In addition to damaging them, this attack reduces defensive power for all enemies that it hits. Perfect when used in combination with other high-damage heroes.

Combat Spotlight: Slo Feng #2

Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy - Slo Feng Combat Spotlight #2!

Sparkle: A multi-part attack that also keeps Feng out of harm's way! Our hero jumps high above the battle field before throwing down a lightning bolt and finally crashing down on his opponent's head, hammer first. While he's in the air, Slo Feng cannot be damaged, even by attacks that otherwise hit the whole party.

Combat Spotlight: Slo Feng #1

Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy - Slo Feng Combat Spotlight #1!

Slo Feng takes things a little more leisurely than other heroes. All of his abilities take 1-3 turns to charge up, but when they hit, they land some serious damage! Using him successfully involves careful planning, with other heroes buffing up his strength while he's charging. For the convenience of these GIFs, his charge time is turned off.

Meatball: Hurl a heavily seasoned projectile! It takes a couple of turns to cook, but once it's ready this meaty delight will leave foes frowning.

The Synthetic World

Yakuza Kiwami is out in English next week, so what better time to get your groove on in Japan?

Here's a smooth synth track from an upcoming Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy zone! Tokyo is an almost modern day zone in the game and will feature a crazy big Kaiju that poses a threat to the entire city. It's time to get huge.

Combat Spotlight: Pedro Plantain #3

Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy - Pedro Plantain Combat Spotlight #3!

Paco: Need someone punched in the brain? Call Paco Plantain. Pedro can summon his macho mustached uncle to deal major damage a single foe. While Pedro's skills are largely focused on support abilities, this one's a big damage dealer that can get you out of tough situations quickly.

Combat Spotlight: Pedro Plantain #2

Kaiju Big Battel Fighto Fantasy - Pedro Plantain Combat Spotlight #2!

Distribute: Pedro's all about giving back to the people. While his friends are walloping their enemies, Pedro can heal their injuries at the expense of his own HP. Health is distributed equally among them and everyone benefits. It might hurt him a little in the short term, but the gain is universal!

Combat Spotlight: Pedro Plantain #1

This week's Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy combat spotlights focus on Pedro Plantain! He's not the heaviest damage dealer, but he's crafty! Able to debilitate foes, Pedro is a great friend to have in your corner.

Pablo: Years ago, Pedro's dear brother Pablo died a horrible, horrible death in the Kaiju ring. Pedro was understandably devastated, but when life gives you a zombie brother, you might as well put him to work. Pedro can summon the zombie Pablo to rush in and bite an enemy, inflicting them with a poison that drains health with each turn.

Plantain on the Brain

I've got plantains on the brain! This week in Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy we take a look at Pedro Plantain's niece, Penelope. She doesn't fight, but she serves a crucial role outside of battle: Crawling into small, spooky places too tiny for Pedro or the other heroes to explore. It would be a bad idea for them to even try, they'd end up like Winnie the Pooh. No time for clowning around like that, guys.
Once you send Penelope out to search, she may find cool new weapons and items or may unlock nearby doors. Always explore everywhere!

Combat Spotlight: Dusto Bunny #3

Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy - Dusto Bunny Combat Spotlight #3!

Wobble: We end our week with a wiggle and a wobble. Dusto Bunny can heal his friends by shaking like a madman, breaking out dance moves the likes of which no one's seen before. Some of macho movements are so inspirational that they can even bring KO'd buddies back to their feet! This simple Wobble is his most basic, though. No raising the dead with this one.

Combat Spotlight: Dusto Bunny #2

Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy - Dusto Bunny Combat Spotlight #2!

Dirt Fling: Dusto's gonna put some dirt in your eye! Sling some mud into an unsuspecting enemy's face and stun them for a couple of turns. Here we see Dusto harassing a Muscle Mummy; you may notice that Dusto takes some damage here too. If you look at his health bar, you'll see he's been poisoned! The point is, be very careful when messing with mummies, even if you've got a pocketful of dirt.

Combat Spotlight: Dusto Bunny #1

Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy - Dusto Bunny Combat Spotlight #1!

Hop: Dusto Bunny is the team's primary healer/motivational speaker, but he can throw his weight around when he needs to. The Hop ability flings Dusto into the air where he's safe from any enemy attacks and then drops him right on their heads.

Thinking Outside the (ro)Box

Each Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy hero has a special ability that they can use outside of battle. Sometimes these are necessary to progress through the game, sometimes they open up optional areas to reward careful players who love to explore!

Robox here can hack into computers, taking players into a spooky world outside of reality. When Robox first joins the team, players will have to take him through a series of test chambers filled with hacking puzzles and broken down prototype robots. Don't die!

Sand Everywhere

The latest Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy track takes us back to Egypt, where something spooky and buff lurks in a cave just waiting to punch out any unsuspecting heroes. Rumors say that if you get bit by a mummy, you get totally sick and it's really gross. It makes sense, have you seen their teeth? You don't want to get wrapped up in that kind of bad business.

Combat Spotlight: Silver Potato #3

Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy - Silver Potato Combat Spotlight #3!

Bake: Always be careful when using the oven. Don't forget to turn it off after use and don't just turn the heat up to max because you think it will cook your food quicker! There's a reason for recommended temperatures and times on recipes. Don't try to cheat the system, it won't work, your food will taste bad. Silver Potato isn't concerned with that, though. He's using his Bake spell to toast some mummies.

Combat Spotlight: Silver Potato #2

Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy - Silver Potato Combat Spotlight #2!

Microwave: Every RPG needs a dude with elemental magic attacks, but most games don't feature a dancing potato man who fires magical beams via sick dance moves. All of Potato's magic is inspired by food prep or food pun. Here we see him using an electric shock attack that teaches an important lesson: Don't put metal in the microwave!

Combat Spotlight: Silver Potato #1

Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy - Silver Potato Combat Spotlight #1!

Chip: Like the best wizards, Silver Potato fights using dance moves and cool poses that fire out elemental beams, but sometimes an enemy's just too tough! That's where Chip comes into play. This move chips away at an enemy's magical resistance, leaving them vulnerable to dangerous deadly magic attacks. Stat buffs and debuffs are essential to survival in Fighto Fantasy, so use them smartly!

Ol' Dirty Boston

The Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy heroes were so busy keeping the world safe that they forgot about the 4th of July! That's OK; American Beetle has plenty of everyday fireworks for them to shoot off.

Sometimes protecting the world starts at home. What kind of hero are you if you can't even clean your own dishes or take out the trash? A filthy hero, that's what kind. Here we see Dusto Bunny exploring a disgusting apartment that would make him feel right at home if it weren't full of shady enemy monsters.

Combat Spotlight: American Beetle #3

Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy - American Beetle Combat Spotlight #3!

Combo: More's better, right? Combo lets Beetle punch an enemy upside the head 1-4 times. It's a bit random, so you're taking a risk! There's a 90% chance he'll hit twice, but only a 50% chance of three hits and a 25% chance of landing all four. Each hit does more damage than the last; this clip's from early in the game so the increase is small, but once you're beefed up with high-powered gear, it really makes a difference!

Combat Spotlight: American Beetle #2

Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy - American Beetle Combat Spotlight #2!

USA!: You can't wear flashy pants like Beetle's unless you're a true showboat. Flash the flag (accompanied by a sick guitar riff by Glock & mr8bit) and work the crowd into a frenzy to boost Beetle's attack power! Nothing like audience hype to power up your punches.

Combat Spotlight: American Beetle #1

Let's get to know our Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy heroes a little better! This week, we're spotlighting a few of the combat moves of American Beetle.

Apollo Punch: Named for a mythological boxing hero with fists of a god, Beetle's fiery punch is sure to ruin the day of any enemy who takes a fist to the face. It's especially good against flammable foes, so if you're hiding in snow, made of cardboard, or a living tree monster, watch out for this one!

Boston Bound Bumblers

And so, our Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy heroes bumble their way into Boston. This zone is divided into a few different areas connected by subway.
